When most people think of camp, they picture the big moments.
Trolleys screaming down a zipline, the sunset over baptisms in the lake, the worship night that gives you goosebumps, and the bonfire that led to someone giving their life to Christ.
It’s easy to remember God shows up for those big moments … they’re pretty “in your face.” But if you have worked at camp for more than a week, you know something quietly true: Most of camp is not made of big moments. Most of camp is made of small ones. Small interactions, small decisions, small actions.
This could be inspecting a zipline for the one hundredth time, doing dishes, folding t-shirts, giving a camper directions, waking up early, and going to bed tired.
Can God be in these moments just as much as He is in the big ones? If we take a look at Scripture, the answer is a resounding yes.
God is Near
There are mountain top moments throughout the Bible, too. Scenes where God speaks through a burning bush, a donkey speaks, Jesus raises a girl from the dead. But His presence is clear in all the in-between times, too. These quieter moments, and remembering how close He is to us through them, are just as powerful and important as the [mountain tops].
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” – Psalm 145:18
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” – Colossians 3:23
Notice what these verses don’t say.
They don’t say: God is near only during the powerful worship set.
They don’t say: Be still only during the life-changing moment.
They don’t say: Work for the Lord only when the job feels important.
They say: whatever you do.
They say: Be still.
They say: The Lord is near.
Which means the hidden places matter. The unnoticed things matter. The small things matter. No matter how your day looks today, know that the Lord is near. He is close through every mundane moment, every responsibility quietly fulfilled. And He is inviting you to draw near to Him, to soak up His presence … even today.
Prayer
God,
Help me see You in the small things;
In the ordinary, the unnoticed, and in the routines of life.
When the work feels small, remind me that it matters to You.
When I am tired, be near.
Teach me to serve with a full heart,
In whatever I do.
Amen.
