Guide Semester Student Testimonials

Julie Kurz - Post Semester Thoughts

Julie Kurz attended the Fall Wilderness Guide Semester in 2016

Spending a semester with Glorieta is so fun and so worth it!

The course felt like a wilderness guiding immersion and provided exposure to many different facets of the industry. Not only did we learn tons of new skills but we were taught at some of the most stunning locations in the Southwest. All of our “classrooms” would make incredible sightseeing trips in their own right.

I think one of the most beneficial aspects of the course was the strong emphasis on the “guide mindset.” We were always asking: How would my clients feel in this situation? How would I teach this? What needs to happen behind the scenes to make this run smoothly? I walked away from the course with a firm grasp on how to plan and execute successful wilderness trips.

As the semester came to a close, both Hunter and Scott took an active role in everyone’s job search. It was awesome to have them reach out to their network and help make connections in the industry.

Elizabeth Richards - Post Semester Survey

What component of the program did you value most during your time as a participant in this course?

Definitely the guide mindset and the focus on noticing and employing that. The certifications are a tangible thing that say we are capable of practicing in a certain field but the guide mindset is a clearly key component in all of our trainings and experiences. It lends itself greatly to our future successes.

Has completing this course given you an idea of what direction you would like to go professionally? If so, what direction is that?

It most definitely showed me what components of the outdoors I enjoyed most and what I would feel comfortable teaching to people. I quite enjoyed backpacking and canyoneering and would feel comfortable guiding either one in the future.

What did the instructor do well?

He employed a near perfect balance of sternness and encouragement in everything he taught. He taught well and told us that, though he was teaching something one way, there are other ways to do it. He was never proud or unreachable.
